What Stress & Trauma Do to Your Body — And How to Begin Healing

If you've ever felt like your body was betraying, you after a painful experience… you’re not alone. Trauma doesn’t just affect your emotions—it physically imprints itself into your body, brain, and nervous system. It can linger for years, even decades, beneath the surface of your daily life. You may not have the words for it, but your body remembers.
In my eBook What Stress & Trauma Do to Your Body, I walk women through the hidden ways trauma rewires the mind and body, and most importantly, how to begin healing with compassion, truth, and faith.
Let’s explore some of those truths here.
The Science of Stress & Trauma
When you experience trauma, especially chronically or in childhood, your nervous system gets stuck in survival mode. Your amygdala (the brain’s alarm system) becomes hypervigilant. Your prefrontal cortex (the part responsible for rational thought) begins to shut down. Over time, you might feel:
Foggy and forgetful
Constantly on edge or emotionally numb
Exhausted but unable to sleep
Trapped in repeating relationship patterns
Ashamed of your “overreactions”
It’s not weakness. It’s not “just anxiety." It’s the physiological cost of unhealed trauma.
Your vagus nerve, which connects your brain to your organs, can become dysregulated, disrupting your digestion, heart rate, immune system, and hormones. Cortisol (the stress hormone) floods your body, keeping you in a state of chronic inflammation and adrenal fatigue. You may gain weight, lose your sense of identity, or experience hormone imbalance—especially in midlife.
Why Traditional Talk Therapy Alone Often Isn't Enough
Many women come to me after years in therapy, still wondering why they know the truth but can’t feel peace in their bodies.
Because trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind.
You need nervous system regulation tools like breathwork, somatic prayer, vagus nerve exercises, gentle movement, and Scripture-based mindfulness. You need a faith-based framework that says:
“You’re not crazy. You’re not broken. You’re healing—and God is with you in it.”
God Cares About Your Body, Not Just Your Spirit
Psalm 34:18 tells us:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
This means He is not distant from your pain—He is deeply present in it. Jesus didn’t just die to save your soul; He came to bring wholeness to your entire being.
And that includes your nervous system, your hormones, your brain, and your heart.
Your Healing is Holy
You don’t have to push through. You don’t have to keep pretending you’re “fine." You don’t have to stay silent.
Your story matters. Your body’s signals are speaking truth. And with the right tools, support, and God’s grace, you can heal.
