DNA DAMAGE and AGING

DNA Damage and Aging: The Cellular Breakdown

Our DNA, the instruction manual for our cells, is under constant assault. Over time, this leads to a process called genomic instability, a hallmark of aging. How does your genome become unstable? There are several ways, diet, lifestyle, exposure to toxins, and genetics all play a role in each one.

The first contributor to aging is called Oxidative Stress. Every day, our cells produce energy through a process that generates harmful free radicals. These unstable molecules can damage DNA, causing mutations.

Then, there are environmental factors. UV radiation, pollution, and certain chemicals can directly damage DNA or increase free radical production… and increase in these factors means an increase in the rate of aging.

Replication errors also play a part in aging. Each time a cell divides, it must copy its entire genome. Despite impressive accuracy, errors occasionally occur during this process.

Over time, chemical modifications to DNA (without changing the sequence) can alter gene expression, affecting how cells function. These epigenetic changes are part of the aging process.

As DNA damage accumulates, it leads to several aging-related issues. One of the most significant is cellular senescence, where damaged cells stop dividing and enter a zombie-like state. These senescent “zombie cells” secrete inflammatory compounds that harm nearby healthy cells, contributing to chronic inflammation associated with aging.

DNA damage can also lead to reduced protein quality, resulting in the production of faulty proteins that don't function correctly in the body. This can affect everything from enzyme activity to structural integrity of tissues. Additionally, damage to mitochondrial DNA reduces cellular energy production, contributing to fatigue and organ dysfunction that we often associate with getting older.

Perhaps most critically, DNA damage in stem cells reduces their ability to replenish tissues, slowing healing and regeneration throughout the body. This stem cell exhaustion is a key factor in both the visible and internal signs of aging.

Telomeres: The Cellular Timekeepers

Telomeres are like the plastic tips on shoelaces, protecting the ends of our chromosomes from fraying. These repetitive DNA sequences play a crucial role in cellular aging and overall health. As we age, our telomeres naturally shorten, acting as a biological clock that ticks down with each cell division. When a cell divides, the DNA replication machinery can't reach the very end of the chromosome, resulting in a slight loss of genetic material. Telomeres serve as a buffer, allowing this loss to occur without damaging essential genes.

However, this protective mechanism comes at a cost – telomeres shorten with each division. As telomeres wear down, cells face increasing genomic instability. When telomeres become critically short, cells typically stop dividing and enter a state of senescence or undergo programmed cell death. The rate of telomere shortening isn't uniform across individuals. The factors mentioned above (stress, environmental toxins, and nutrition) can accelerate telomere erosion. Which is one way that scientists are able to identify the rise in accelerated aging that we’re seeing today.

Why do people age differently?

Why do some people die from a dis-ease and others do not?

Why do people die prematurely?

Why do some people have a long health span of healthy living while others enter the dis-ease span of life that hasten the end of life with some sickness and disease?

Why do some people bask in the sunshine of good health, while others suffer from dis-ease?

Is it genes? Environment? Lifestyle? Twists of fate?

Yes, we will all one day die, and we will age, but what is the determining factors of our lifespan?

The answer is simply found in our cells! Your cellular health determines your health and if you will live long and healthy or die prematurely with sickness and dis-ease.

What science is discovering is that the Telomeres of your cells are the key determining factor of whether you will live a long health span or enter the disease span of life at any age.

Telomeres are the protective end caps of our DNA at the end of your chromosomes. When telomeres shorten, unravel, and are damaged we in turn begin to unravel and experience sickness, dis-ease, and aging.

When we preserve the telomeres, we preserve our health! Science is discovering that every dis-ease is associated with telomere loss!

We lose and replace cells every day with stem cells that can divide and give rise to more stem cells that rebuild, repair, restore, activate and rejuvenate our DNA, chromosomes, and telomeres.

When we have healthy stem cells, we have a healthy body that keeps us in the health span of life and preserve our health span and deter the dis-ease span of life.

So, what causes our cells to age and what can we do to preserve our stem cells and telomeres?

Scientific studies have been done extensively about people who live a long health span versus those who do not. There have been longevity studies done all over the world in what are called blue zones and also stem cell and telomere studies that consistently without corroboration come to the same conclusions!

So, what do these studies say about what damages our stem cells and telomeres?

Oxidative Stress! Stress to our cells is caused by numerous factors that create inflammation, glycation, and free radicals that destabilize and create gene mutations. When we have an imbalance of antioxidants and oxidants, we create oxidative stress.

This in turn damages our cells and in doing so damages the organs and systems of the body. Then we suffer from aging and all forms of sickness and dis-ease.

When we start to feel run down, fatigued, stressed, depressed, etc. these are signs that are cells are sick!

What causes oxidative stress?

  • Emotional and Mental stress due to family, jobs, finances, life events, worry, frustration, loss, etc.

  • Physical Stress due to poor diet, lack of exercise, overweight, obese, etc.

  • Everything is connected in the spirit, mind, and body!

The Longevity studies have demonstrated that those who live long and disease free are:

1. Happy people who have an attitude of gratitude.

2. Loving people who have a healthy love of themselves and love others.

3. Are involved with community, family, and spiritual gatherings.

4. Have a sense of purpose that involves service and servanthood.

5. Clean animal proteins are part of the diet - organic and not processed and refined. Be sure you include a wide variety of fresh organic berries and fruit, vegetables, chia seeds, flax and pumpkin seeds, and healthy fats.

6. Downshift from stress through prayer, meditation, sleep, rest, relaxation, exercise, fun, etc.

7. Eat mindfully and stop when 80% full.

8. Move naturally and incorporate exercise into life.

9. Surround themselves with people who have positive behaviors.

10. Drink sufficient water every day to hydrate the body and ensure they get in minerals each day.

11. Wine at 5pm with friends in moderation.
